Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are still a part of each other’s universes.
After reports surfaced that the couple had ended their yearslong romance, a rep confirmed to E! News that the breakup rumors are “not true,” adding, “they are happily together.”
Rumors of a split come just five months after it was revealed that the actress and Coldplay frontman—who shares kids Apple, 19, and Moses, 17, with ex Gwyneth Paltrow—had privately gotten engaged years ago.
Their lowkey engagement rings true to the pair’s romance, as they have managed to keep details about their relationship largely out of the spotlight.
The musician, 47, was first linked to the Fifty Shades of Grey star, 34, when she was seen at one of his band's concerts in 2017 after meeting through a mutual friend. The following year, the duo confirmed their romance by holding hands at Stella McCartney's Hollywood fashion show.
Fast-forward to 2019, and Dakota became one of the bigger parts of Chris’ universe, as his ex Gwyneth herself shared.
"I love her," Paltrow the Goop founder told Harper Bazaar in 2019. "I can see how it would seem weird because it's sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her."
"I always start to think of the ampersand sign—what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by?" she explained. "There's so much juice in leaning in to something like that."
And she wasn’t the only one leaning all in, as evidenced by their family outings over the years, as well as Chris serenading Dakota at his concerts.
In fact, the Madame Web star told Vanity Fair in 2022 that she often accompanied her now-ex on tour when she wasn’t working, adding that once they first met years ago, they “never really left each other.”
And it was a sentiment they held onto privately, as Dakota explained, due in part to protect Chris’ family.
“Maybe I think about relationships like that differently because I grew up in my family,” Dakota, whose parents are Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, explained to VF. “We were all cool. Obviously, there were times where it was not cool, but I experienced that, so I don’t want that in my life…It’s better to be kind, and it’s also really nice that everybody actually really loves each other and has each other’s backs.”
The actress also shared insight into what the couple loved about being with each other the most.
“We go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it's nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” Dakota told Elle UK in 2021. “Most of the partying takes place inside my house."
Read on for a closer look at their romance.
Let the romance rumors begin! After Dakota Johnson was spotted at a Coldplay concert, fans started to speculate that the actress could be dating Chris Martin. While the pair didn't confirm anything for months, a few additional sightings suggested these two were more than just friends.
While attending the launch of Stella McCartney's Women's Autumn 2018 and Men's Autumn/Winter 2018 Collections at SIR Studios, the pair was spotted holding hands, giving fans further confirmation they were dating.
First comes love, then comes ma—ching tattoos? The Fifty Shades actress and the Coldplay singer appeared to show off infinity tattoos.
In an interview with Tatler, Dakota confirmed she was dating Chris with a simple message. "I'm not going to talk about it," she told the publication. "But I am very happy."
After Chris supported Dakota at her star-studded 30th birthday party in October, the actress returned the favor when it was time for her boyfriend to perform on Saturday Night Live. The pair celebrated the special show by attending the official after-party together.
The Fifty Shades of Grey alum donned her director's hat for Coldplay's "Cry, Cry, Cry" music video. The video's story is about a couple working through life's obstacles side-by-side and holding each other when they cry.
A source confirmed to E! News that the High Note actress and Coldplay frontman nestled into a modern Cape Cod-styled home in Malibu, Calif. for a price tag of $12.5 million.
During summer break, the couple jetted off to Palma De Mallorca, Spain, where they enjoyed a boat ride and some sightseeing in the city.
Before beginning to play Coldplay's latest single, "My Universe," which is a collaboration with the group BTS, Chris pointed to Dakota in the balcony and delivered a special message. "This is about my universe, and she's here," he told the crowd.
We want something just like this duo's outing to grab coffee in Malibu.
