He's just a 2024 Emmy nominee.
ICYMI, Ryan Gosling just earned an Emmy nod in the Guest Actor In a Comedy Series category for his work as host of Saturday Night Live. (For all the 2024 Emmy nominations, head on over here.)
And surprisingly, despite his ever-impressive resume, this serves as his first ever nomination for the award show honoring the best of television. But he's not the only star you may be shocked to realize hasn't scored the golden statue quite yet.
In fact, though Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig has been nominated for nine individual Emmys, including seven for her performances on the sketch comedy series, she has never taken home the trophy as of 2024.
And they’re not the only stars who have long graced your TV screens who earned their first nods this year. Among them are Paul Rudd, who was nominated for his supporting role in Only Murders in the Building, Dakota Fanning for her work in Ripley alongside Andrew Scott (who earned his second nomination for his work in the limited series) as well as Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, who was nominated for Fellow Travelers.
Overall, there were a few clear leaders amongst the nominees.
Shogun’s debut season emerged as the top-contender at this year’s ceremony, earning a whopping 25 nominations in total. Season two of The Bear followed closely behind with 23 (setting a record for most nominees in one year by a comedy series) with Only Murders In The Building’s season three earning 21 nominations.
And among those shows, actors such as Jeremy Allen White, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ayo Edebiri, Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez—making the The Wizards of Waverly Place alum a first-time nominee for an acting Emmy.
To see how this year’s nominees reacted to their nods from the Television Academy, keep reading.
"Wow," Sofia wrote in a statement. "Griselda was my first dramatic role ever, and it took us 15 years to bring her to life. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who was a part of this series. I could have never done this without my director Andres Baiz, my costar Alberto Guerra, Eric Newman and the full creative team, my partner and producer Luis Balaguer, Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and their team at Netflix, and all the amazing cast and crew."
And the America's Got Talent judge also nodded to her Emmy-winning roots.
"I never dreamed that after Modern Family I would be able to work on something as special as Griselda," she added. "I’m honored to be recognized alongside Jodie, Brie, Juno, and Naomi, incredible women who gave us incredible TV this year. Thank you to the Television Academy for this incredible honor!”
"It’s a real honour for me and the whole creative team for BECKHAM to be recognised by the TV Academy," the soccer star wrote. "Making this series was such a personal journey, a love letter to football and my family. It has been overwhelming for me and Victoria that we have had such a warm and positive response to the series. I’m so grateful to the incredible team led by Fisher Stevens and also to all those people from my life and career who took part and who have played such an important role in my story.”
Upon being informed she'd nabbed her second Emmy nomination for her Abbott Elementary performance by Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego during the July 17 nominations livestream, Sheryl exclaimed, "That never gets old!"
"90 percent sure my pottery studio thinks someone I love just died because I yelled WHAT and then started sobbing when i got the text that GIRLS5EVA WAS NOMINATED FOR 2 EMMY AWARD," the star wrote in an emotional Instagram post. "CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FEARLESS LEADER @scardinoandsons AND ALL OF OUR WRITERS FOR THEIR NOMINATION FOR WRITING AND @sarabareilles FOR HER NOMINATION FOR BEST SONG FOR HER GENIUS SONG "MEDIUM TIME." A REMINDER THAT ALL 3 SEASONS OF THE BEST COMEDY YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IS AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX SO GET INTO IT!!!!"
“I am still amazed by what we accomplished in 1985 and I’m even more amazed after receiving an Emmy nomination for The Greatest Night In Pop," Lionel said. "It has been an absolute joy to be able to bring this moment in history to life alongside Netflix. A big thank you and congratulations to all of the artists and participants for making “We Are The World” happen, and thank you to the Television Academy for recognizing our documentary.”
“I’m incredibly happy that Red, White, and Royal Blue has been nominated for an Emmy today," the director of the popular Casey McQuiston novel adaptation noted. "It reflects the hard work and talents of so many people who helped bring it to life. The film was made with love and I’m very grateful for all the love it has received in response.”
“We are so honored," the producers wrote. "We share this with Jen, Courtenay, Julie, Sue, Brianna and all the wonderful people at Amazon who have been so supportive. Casey McQuiston wrote a joyful, wonderful book that captured the imagination of readers everywhere. We were honored to be trusted to turn it into a film and are so grateful to Matthew Lopez and our cast and crew, especially Nick Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, for this wonderful ride. Bringing hope and love into the world always feels worthwhile and we are most grateful to the fans for loving this film.”
